Utah’s Southwest

It’s hard to believe that there are six national parks in the southwest part of Utah. Yet each national park is so different. The stone towers of Zion National Park; the wonderful blue waters of Lake Powell; and the greatness of the Grand Canyon North Rim just to name a few.

State parks located at the reservoirs such as Minersville, Gunlock, and Quail Creek offer some of Utah’s best fishing and boating.

Utah’s year round recreational opportunities are endless. You can take an exciting and thrilling mountain bike ride or hike into the back - country, and feel like you're the first to see such sites. Don't forget to play on one of the all year round golf courses or feel the powdery snow as you ski down a mountainside. Reel in that big rainbow trout or just relax and take in all the wonderful colors of Utah’s Southwest side.

Zion National Park

Zion National Park is the oldest national park in Utah. Zion is accessible on Scenic Byway 9 from I-15 on the west, or by way of US 89 on the east at Mt. Carmel Junction, north of Kanab. You can drive, bicycle, or take a tram. Horseback rides are also available. Take a hike along the park’s trails. There are easy trails (Some of the trails are accessible by wheelchair). If you Ana mind wading through the Virgin River the 16 mile hike is wonderful as well - this requires a permit and advance preparation.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Unlike Zion where you look up at the cliffs, at Bryce Canyon you look down upon miles of wonderful colors. With the deep green pine and spruce trees it adds an exquisite ancient to the eroded limestone which is constantly changing with the sun.

The park is open all year. Summer is the busiest season when hiking, sightseeing, horseback riding and photography are the most popular. Red Canyon, Tropic Reservoir, Sunset Cliffs and Powell Point are just a few of the most popular trails in which you can hike. There are more than 50 miles of trails in which to explore. You may wish to take along a bike and brave the 14 miles through Bryce Canyon along the park road. No water is available along the trails, and with the dry air and lack of shade you'll need to take plenty of water with you.

In the winter the white snow adds a wonderful contrast to the red rocks of Bryce Canyon. Try your hand at cross country skiing and snow shoeing or snowmobile to view the area. Which ever you choose Bryce Canyon National Park is a site that should never be missed.
